In summary, most of the cartilaginous part of the skeleton fuses to become bony, which subsequently results in fusion of bones, causing the number of bones to reduce to 206 in adults.

I would like to give the example of coccyx (tail bone). In infants, it is composed of 4 separate bones, but later on as the development proceeds, the cartilage between the individual segments calcifies (becomes bony) and as a result there the bone exists as one single piece in adults.
